TOPONOMI
TOPONYMY
The area was once known as Jembal but was changed to Kedai Lalat (which can be translated to ‘The Shop of Flies’) without much planning in 1922. The town had been overcome with a large number of traders and buyers in a short amount of time, much like the occurrence of flies in a shop, and as a result, the town was renamed Kedai Lalat (Tengku Hafez, 2012). The name was not a very pleasing one and so it was officially changed to ‘Kota Jembal’ by the Chief Minister of Kelantan (Tuan Guru Nik Ab.Aziz Youtube, 2012) though it did not stop the locals from continuing to refer to it as ‘Kedai Lalat’ (Mobydick, 2010).
